ICLoS was created to introduce and manage Internet points in the NATO / ONU military compounds, involved in peace-keeping and peace-enforcement missions. The main aim of ICLoS was to assist the military staff in maintaining interpersonal relationships and in keeping contacts with family and friends. Within 2001 ICLoS provided all the Italian military compounds in the Balcan area (Albania, Bosnia, Croatia, Kosovo, Makedonia - FYROM) with its Internet St@tion , an Internet point service for the welfare of the military staff. Immediately well-appreciated by both the Italian and the other European Armies involved in SFOR and KFOR missions, the Internet St@tion spread through the years, becoming a standard welfare service in every peace-keeping / peace-enforcement mission all around the world, from Afghanistan to Iraq and Lebanon nowdays. In early 2005 ICLoS extended its welfare services with the Phone Station , a satellite telephone service based on VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology, in direct competition with the incumbent Telecom Italia, the only telecom operator (a former public company) historically providing telephone services to the Italian military forces abroad. In just a couple of months Phone St@tion heavily struck the competition against Telecom Italia, so that in some contexts, i.e. Lebanon, Phone St@tion completely replaced the oldest operator. In mid 2006 Phone St@tion was put in the european armies welfare market, thus starting its struggle against the other incumbents from each other foreign country. With its services, ICLoS is nowdays undoubtedly the european leader in providing communication services, both voice and Internet, for the welfare of the international military forces. Remote areas, where communication infrastructures are scarce or missing, inspired ICLoS to direct its attention to telecommunication technologies, particularly the satellite data communication field. At the very first time, the connections to the Internet were through either long-distance radio bridges or VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) bidirectional satellite stations, operated by local and foreign telco partner. As service reliability and bandwidth demands increased, ICLoS begins training and preparing its staff within the company itself, so that, in very few years ICLoS and its staff gained the experience necessary to cover a highly competitive position in the market of the satellite communication systems. Since 2002 ICLoS has been moving toward a complete technical and technological independence by external telecommunication providers, giving the market the pure role of hardware supplier. Thanks to its skills and know-how and to its proprietary hardware and software infrastructure, ICLoS expanded in the latter years its service offer in the civil field and is now able to provide complex services for both military and civil applications. |
